Chapter 1 – Faldor’s Farm

Having all but destroyed my old Minecraft SMP of many years (there is an early backup of it on my computer somewhere) and, having taken a couple of months away from Minecraft altogether, it is time to make a fresh start. I always found that ‘Skelly Craft‘ and even the briefly named ‘Skelly Land‘ were too narcissistic and I wanted something a bit more generic, and dare I say it – cooler!

Trying to come up with a name, I was thinking about the sort of builds I usually revert to. Either quaint medieval cottages or castles or towers. There have been some exceptions but they are the exceptions that prove the rule. Anyway, thinking about that I was hit by a bolt of inspiration: Use the world created by David Edding’s in his Belgariad and Mallorean saga’s as a base for the world. In the books there are a number of wizards who were taught by one of the Gods, Aldur, and who lived in ‘The Vale’. And there it was the name for my new sever.

Of course the story doesn’t start in The Vale. It starts in a place called Faldor’s Farm in the country of Sendaria with a boy called Garion:

The first thing the boy Garion remebered was the kitchen at Faldor’s farm. For all the rest of his life he had a special warm feeling for kitchens and those peculiar sounds and smells that seemed somehow to combine into a bustling seriousness that had to do with love and food and comfort and security and, above all, home.

David Eddings, The Belgariad – Pawn of Prophecy

If you haven’t read the books and you’re a fan of epic fantasy then I would highly recommend them…

This first paragraph rang true for me, and others who I have spoken to, about what a Minecraft SMP spawn should be like. A safe and comfortable haven, (mostly) free from mobs with some of the essentials to hand to get you started on your adventure!
